What is the mind? A yogic perspective

In the tapestry of human experience, the mind emerges as a complex and enigmatic force. It is the source of our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions, shaping our reality and influencing our actions. Yet, the mind remains elusive, often defying our attempts to fully comprehend it. Yoga, an ancient practice rooted in the wisdom of India, offers profound insights into the nature of the mind and provides practical tools to cultivate a calm, focused, and liberated mind.



The Mind in Yogic Philosophy

Patanjali, the sage who compiled the Yoga Sutras, describes a state of yoga as "freedom from the fluctuations of the mind." This verse introduces two key concepts: "Citta" and "Vrtti." "Citta" refers to the mind-field, while "Vrtti" denotes the fluctuations or modifications of the mind.


The Samkhya school of philosophy provides a structural model of the mind, dividing it into three components:


  • Manas: The mind, which receives information from the senses, processes it, and forms impressions.


  • Buddhi: The intellect, which discriminates between right and wrong, makes decisions, and helps us understand the world.


  • Ahamkara: The ego, which creates a sense of individuality and identity.



The Mind's Functions

Patanjali describes the mind's functions in the Yoga Sutras as correct understanding, incorrect understanding, imagination, sleep, and memory. These functions are influenced by our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions.


The Path to a Calm Mind

Yoga offers a variety of practices to cultivate a calm and focused mind. These practices include:

  • Meditation: Regular meditation helps to quiet the mind, reduce stress, and improve concentration.

  • Pranayama: Breathing exercises, such as pranayama, can regulate the breath and calm the nervous system.

  • Asana: Physical postures, or asanas, can promote physical and mental well-being.

  • Yoga Nidra: Yogic sleep, or Yoga Nidra, is a powerful relaxation technique that can induce deep relaxation and rejuvenation.


By practicing these techniques, we can gradually gain control over our minds and experience a state of inner peace and tranquility.


The mind, though mysterious and powerful, can be tamed and transformed. Yoga offers a comprehensive approach to understanding and managing the mind, enabling us to live a more fulfilling and enlightened life. By embracing the teachings of yoga and incorporating its practices into our daily lives, we can unlock the true potential of our minds and experience the profound benefits of a calm, focused, and liberated mind.
