Features of 'viniyoga'

This is a gentle and subtle practice that produces powerful results. The style is suitable for beginners of all ages or anyone looking to improve physical & mental wellbeing, strength, flexibility. The style was conceived to increase mindfulness, reduce stress and improve focus.

Repeat & Stay

In Viniyoga, postures are often repeated and held for extended periods. This allows practitioners to develop a deeper sense of body awareness and to cultivate steadiness and comfort in the postures. By staying in a pose, practitioners can observe the subtle sensations and responses of their body.

Breath & Movement

Viniyoga emphasizes the integration of breath and movement. The breath is used to guide and support the postures, and the postures are modified to facilitate deeper and more conscious breathing. This integration helps to create a harmonious flow between the body and mind.

Function over form

Viniyoga prioritizes the function of the posture over its precise form. The focus is on achieving the desired effect or benefit of the posture, rather than striving for perfection in its alignment. This allows for individual variations and modifications based on the practitioner's needs and abilities.

Modification & customisation

Viniyoga is highly adaptable and can be modified to suit the individual needs of each practitioner. This might involve adjusting the intensity of the posture, using props for support, or focusing on specific areas of the body. By customizing the practice, practitioners can ensure that they are working within their own limitations and maximizing the benefits of yoga.

The yoga toolkit

The yoga toolkit includes practices drawn from texts like the 'yoga sutra'. The toolkit and the practices empower individuals as they navigate the stresses of economy and society.

Postures

Asanas are physical postures that form the foundation of yoga practice. They help to strengthen the body, improve flexibility, and enhance overall well-being. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali emphasize the importance of asanas as a means of achieving steadiness and comfort in the body

Breathwork

Pranayama is the regulation of breath, considered a vital aspect of yoga. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika describes pranayama as the control of the life force (prana). Through pranayama, practitioners can cultivate mental clarity, reduce stress, and enhance energy levels. The Bhagavad Gita also highlights the importance of breath control, stating that the mind is restless and difficult to control, but it can be calmed through the regulation of breath.

Meditation

Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind on a single object or thought. The Yoga Sutras define meditation as the uninterrupted flow of attention on a single object (dharana-dhyana-samadhi). Through meditation, practitioners can cultivate mindfulness, reduce anxiety, and develop a sense of inner peace.

Reflection

Reflection involves introspection and self-inquiry. It is a process of examining one's thoughts, beliefs, and experiences. The Yoga Yajnavalkya Samhita emphasizes the importance of self-inquiry as a means of realizing the true nature of the self. Through reflection, practitioners can gain deeper insights into their thoughts and emotions, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth.
